FORMER pupils and staff of Tavistock College — or the former grammar and secondary modern schools — from before 2007 are being invited to a school reunion this weekend.
The Tavistock School Reunion Association has organised the latest reunion, the 31st annual event, to take place this Saturday (May 13) at the Bedford Hotel from 7pm.
A spokesperson for the association said: ‘Tavistock School Reunion Association started 31 years ago with a meeting of those pupils and staff that had left school 25 years or more ago and lived locally. The very first reunion was held in 1986. Since then, we have had ex-pupils from all over the world come to our reunions from Scotland, Wales, Norfolk, Chile, Bristol, Canada, Australia and many other places. It is always wonderful to see people who haven’t met since leaving school just meeting up and taking up where they left off before going out into the big wide world.
‘ We know that after these annual reunions, friends get together and hold their own class/year reunions and the friendships just pick up where they left off. Along with these annual reunions, we also produce a magazine once a year, The Phoenix, which is always interesting and a good read. The articles are provided by members of the reunion association. This year there are articles, including an adventure to Antarctica, being on the Antiques Roadshow, working in the Falklands, working in an international institute in Nigeria, all written by ex-pupils or staff of Tavistock School.
‘The grammar school and secondary modern schools were transferred to Tavistock Comprehensive School in 1959, now known as Tavistock College. It was the second comprehensive school in the country, with the first new intake in September 1959. Many of these pupils are attending our next reunion. Also this year we are hoping to see many new faces, as much interest has been shown in the reunion.’
