IN preparation for this Saturday’s Keep Okehampton Tidy community litter pick, organisers have visited Okehampton Primary School to encourage children to keep the town tidy.
Cllr Mike Davies, and Cllr Tony Leech joined headteacher Hazel Fox to take school assembly on Monday morning to focus on the importance of picking up rubbish.
Cllr Davies said: ‘We explained to the children how long it takes different waste materials to decompose.’
The Keep Okehampton Tidy community litter pick will take place this weekend on Saturday, May 20.
Keep Okehampton Tidy was first started by Cllr Mike Davies when he was Mayor of Okehampton and received letters from pupils at Okehampton Primary School highlighting the amount of litter in the town.
A community litter pick was then organised and hundreds of bags of litter were collected from various community groups. This event has continued to be held twice a year.
This Saturday, the Keep Okehampton Tidy organisers would like to encourage all local residents to collect litter in their own streets.
Cllr Mike Davies said: ‘ For those wanting to be part of a larger group there will be two main groups setting off at 10am on Saturday morning and finishing at 11.30am.
‘The Okehampton Rivers Improvements Group will be meeting at 10am next to the recycling bins in the Waitrose Car Park.
‘Another group will be meeting in the car park at Okehampton Primary School.
‘All rubbish that is collected must either be bagged with your usual household rubbish or delivered to the Okehampton Primary School car park by 2pm on Saturday.’
