OKEHAMPTON’S Mari Baldwin won the consolation gold medal at the Cadet and Junior National Table Tennis Championships.

The 13-year-old Okehampton College student was invited to the event by virtue of being one of the top 32 players in her age group in England.

She went out in the group stage of the junior girls’ singles and therefore ended up in the consolation event, where she advanced through the rounds to reach the final against Alice Dillon.

Mari bounced back from losing the first set to win 3-1 (3-11, 11-7, 16-14, 11-9) and take the medal.

She had also come from 2-0 behind in the semi-final as she beat Anaya Patel 3-2 (7-11, 7-11, 11-8, 12-10, 11-4).

Mari said: ‘The semi-final was a really difficult match. I was two sets down and it was a bit nerve-wracking but I got my mojo back.

‘It’s the under-18s and I’m only 13, so I can’t complain at getting the consolation medal!’
