MEADOWLANDS Leisure Centre is sponsoring a Tavistock athlete in her upcoming race for Great Britain.
GB representative Samantha Lake gained a silver medal in the recent European Aquathlon Championships at the end of May and will be heading to compete in the European Middle Distance Triathlon Championships this month. Meadowlands, run by leisure charity Fusion, is sponsoring Samantha through her sporting journey.
Samantha’s passion for swimming began as a child at Meadowlands, training and competing in swimming competitions locally. This aided her in reaching a great standard in swimming, winning gold and silver in the Western Counties Swimming Championships. She progressed to tackling triathlons in her 20s, leading Samantha to qualify for a variety of international triathlon championships, as far afield as Denmark and Germany.
After taking time to focus on her family and adjusting to a new career in primary teaching, Samantha ignited her passion for swimming and running once again, achieving some of her best sporting achievements to date qualifying for the British Marathon Championships, representing Devon in the South West Cross Country Championships and selected to represent England in the Marathon Championships in October of this year. Throughout this epic journey, Samantha has continued to use Meadowlands as her training pool, now coached by her husband at Tavistock Swimming Club.
Samantha said: ‘Thanks to finding the right place to train with the right people at Meadowlands Leisure Centre, I have gone on to win gold and silver in the Western Counties Swimming Championships and hope many more achievements will follow.
‘This local sporting support enables me to get the training I need to represent my country, and without the support of Meadowlands and Fusion Lifestyle, I simply wouldn’t be able to compete to the best of my ability. I would advise anyone looking to compete in sports professionally to look within themselves for the determination and guts to succeed, but also look to their local community for help and encouragement.’
