EGGESFORD?GARDENS Now is the time to get growing Learn everything you need to know about getting the most from your garden at Eggesford Gardens Grow Your Own Veg Day Spring is just around the corner and February is the month for getting things started in the vegetable patch. More people than ever want to have a go at “growing their own” and sales of vegetable seeds continue to outstrip those of flower seeds with the trend looking set to continue. Although many crops are pretty easy to grow, it can be a little daunting if you have never grown vegetables before. If you need a little help to get started, or have had a go and were not happy with the results, then pop along to this year’s Grow Your Own Veg Day at Eggesford Gardens. The free event takes place from 11am to 4pm on Sunday 19th February. Advice on selecting the best crops for your garden and your taste buds along with growing tips will be available from local horticultural expert David Loder. There will be some fantastic special offers on the day along with fun and games and competitions for all the family. Vegetable growing is very rewarding and with a wide range of attractive planters designed specifically for growing edible crops now available, even the smallest back gardens can be turned into productive space. Growing vegetables is a great family pastime and kids really enjoy both the growing and the eating part of the process. Whether it’s tasty tomatoes, crunchy carrots or super fresh spuds, you are sure to get them coming back for more. So if you want to grow some vegetables this year but need a little advice or fancy trying to grow something different, why not visit Eggesford Gardens. ‘Galanthomania’ comes to The Garden House Understated they may be, but snowdrops (Galanthus) have a dedicated following. Not native to the UK, no-one can say for sure when Snowdrops were brought into the country. However, they became fashionable in the mid- 19th century when the small, white flower caught the eye of the Victorians. In recent years they have become something of a cult flower again. Matt Bishop, Head Gardener at The Garden House, is a leading authority on the plant and says, “A mania has developed around Snowdrops. There has been a big increase in interest and there are now about 1,500 varieties. Like anything in life, there are fashions in plants and Snowdrops just seem to have caught people’s imagination.” A Snowdrop Study Day was held at The Garden House on 9th February with people from all over the UK and Northern Europe attending lectures and a viewing of the garden’s collection of Snowdrop cultivars. Two days later nearly 200 ‘Galanthophiles’ from as far afield as Australia, Japan and US, visited the garden as part of an annual Snowdrop Gala which, this year, was based in Tavistock. The Garden House opens for Snowdrop Weekends in February (Sat & Sun 11 am – 4.00 pm), and then open daily as from 1 March. Tel. 01822 854769.
