HELEN SAMSON-HILL
We sometimes just put up with a niggling ache or pain that comes and goes, but never goes away for good. We often say things like, “oh well, thats just me” or “its my age, I‘m not getting any younger”.
However, the truth is just that we don’t have to put up with all of these aches, pains and niggles. Many of them have their cause buried in tight tissues that either cause discomfort in themselves or tighten the near-by joint, and cause discomfort there.
When a client comes to me I look at the whole of them and listen carefully to the story. We work out what is happening and why and I make a plan to reduce the tension and discomfort using massage and tissue release techniques. We also look into why the problem has arisen, which is often based in postural habits. I use simple exercises to help the client make alterations to their posture and gait and so reduce the likelihood of the problem returning. My aim is to equip my clients with the knowledge to help themselves.
I also teach two yoga classes a week. Yoga is a wonderful way to maintain our bodies and minds, bringing flexibility, strength and a sense of well- being.

REFLEXOLOGY
Reflexology is the ancient Chinese art of foot massage. It works with the energy flows within the body helping it to balance itself. When you have a reflexology treatment you will be asked to give an overview of your health with specific information on issues that are worrying you at present. You will then be asked to remove your shoes and socks and with your feet up and in a comfortable position your feet will be massaged. For every part or organ of the body there is a point on the feet, and by massaging these points the body will work towards balancing itself out. The Chinese believe that when the energy flows are blocked this is when disease occurs so it follows that clearing these flows will help the body to cure itself. This massage is deep and is very relaxing. For those of you with ticklish feet, don’t worry as it is deeper than this. Reflexology helps relaxation, improves mood, aids sleep, helps to relieve tension and improves sense of well being. Many people find reflexology useful in a variety of illnesses.

HYPNO-BAND
Weight loss without surgery
Hypnotherapist Claire Knight is the licenced Hypno-Band practitioner for Tavistock, Okehampton and surrounding areas. Working from the Abbey Mead Natural Health Centre in Tavistock, she has seen many clients who are now enjoying new control with their virtual gastric band. In four sessions the Hypno-Band protocol aims to achieve permanent results as a safe alternative to the real-life gastric band operation and at a fraction of the cost. Claire explains, “firstly we work with clients on identifying and changing eating behaviours, habits and emotional triggers. Then using hypnotherapy the subconscious mind is convinced that the stomach is smaller by taking the client through a gastric band operation including sound effects of a hospital theatre. Most people I see have tried every diet going and one thing they all have in common is that they put weight back on again because they don’t address the psychological reasons first. Many issues come from childhood when we are told not to waste food and it becomes embedded in the sub-conscious mind.”

CURVES
Achievable goals + Good support = Results
At this time of year the fitness industry usually starts to target many peoples Achilles heel; the desire to get that beach body for summer. Now we understand how this might be a great way to get people thinking about their bodies and taking that step through the door to a fitness facility, but for some getting their beach body by June this year is not an achievable goal and therefore results in people becoming despondent about exercise and its benefits. Passionate fitness professionals aim to set achievable short and long term goals that will help keep you motivated. It is also important to us to help people understand and experience the other benefits that regular exercise can have on your long- term health. Regular exercise coupled with a healthy balanced diet will not only help us look better, but it will help us feel better too. In the first few months of attendance at Curves many ladies comment on how they feel more energized, they feel more positive about themselves, their flexibility has improved and how everyday activities, which they once found hard to complete, are now no longer an issue. The road to success is not always an easy one, so having a good support network around you can be very important, especially during those moments where you are questioning, “Why am I doing this?” This support network can come in the form of family and friends, or by choosing an exercise and weight loss facility with great staff and a good community spirit. Accountability can be the key to maintaining a regular exercise program, so try to workout with a friend; they are great for keeping you on track during those moments of weakness!
BEAUTIFUL SMILES
ARE YOUR DENTURES SITTING COMFORTABLY?
The loss of some or all of your natural permanent teeth can substantially reduce the quality of your life, your self confidence and some basic daily functions such as eating and speaking. Dentures both complete and partial can be worn which restore our self esteem and confidence with speaking and eating. Over time as our bodies change our mouths do as well, but unfortunately our dentures do not and can become worn, loose and ill fitting. With age the gum ridges in our mouths can shrink quite readily causing dentures to become loose and easily displaced, this is especially noticeable when eating or speaking. Loose dentures can cause painful sore spots to the gum and cheek areas which no longer makes meal times a pleasure. Dentures that are ill fitting and have a worn biting surface often give the wearer a sunken and therefore aged facial appearance, with a noticeable lack of natural lip support. A worn biting surface on the teeth part of the denture can cause problems with chewing which means the wearer has to resort to a soft food diet. This has then been known to contribute to future digestive problems. It is widely accepted that a denture should be replaced every 3-7 years but denture wearers should attend regular check up appointments like those who have their natural teeth. During these appointments the Dentist or for those who have no natural teeth the Clinical Dental Technician can check the gums and soft tissues which can be at risk from oral cancers to ensure that they are healthy. Todays advancement in materials and techniques, coupled with a far greater understanding of the denture wearers emotional needs, enable the clinical dental technician to hand craft dentures with the most natural appearance and improved function. The clinical dental technician personally undertakes all stages both in the clinic and the laboratory to give you dentures which improve your smile and restore facial and lip support so that only you the wearer know that you are wearing dentures.
