Tavistock Country Market
For the past sixty years a co-operative of farmers’ wives, keen cooks, gardeners, bee keepers and anyone with an interest in these things has met in the pannier market early on a Friday morning, to display their home cooked cakes, cookies, pasties, jams and many more lovely items for sale.More recently we have added specialised lines such as cakes and pastries made with no added gluten, sugar and dairy products. In many cases the fruits in the jams and chutneys are homegrown, the eggs on offer are laid by hens that live in grassy fields and food miles are kept to a minimum, soft fruits and vegetables are grown without the use of chemicals- this is food how it used to be. If this appeals to you come and find our stall - we’re in the pannier market every Friday but get there early to see us at our best.
Traditional Puddings
The puddings serve 2-4. A lovely gift or an indulgent treat. Delicious served with cream, ice- cream or custard! Ready cooked All are suitable for home freezing. 5* rating in the National Food Hygiene Rating Scheme. Orders from the catering trade are welcome (discount available). Please call or email for details. We are in the Pannier Market every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Local Stockists Bidders of Yelverton, Devon Farmer Luxtons Farmshop, Okehampton, Devon
Palmers of Tavistock
Our high street shop is situated in Tavistock within the heart of rural Devon. Customers are always welcome to visit our shop to see the high standards we achieve. We aim to source all our meat locally - this ensures we get the ‘best of the best’ - while also helping the local economy. Palmers are members of The National Federation of Meat and Food Traders, a trade organisation which promotes meat to the highest quality standards. We look forward to seeing you soon.
Continental Fruits
We started in Liskeard in 1980 and built a good business base on local produce. We have worked with growers to get them to grow local produce that we can sell in our three local stores. Continental Liskeard Kitchen Garden Trago Liskeard and Tavistock. My brother grows top quality strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, black berries and cherries in the Tamar Valley. He starts picking in late April and keeps us on fruit until the end of October. We have also other farmers that we use in the Tamar Valley growing fancy lettuce and flat lettuce also cucumbers and super cherry tomatoes. We have all our potatoes from local farmers all year round and are now moving on to Maris Peer and a very early crop of Marfona. We have farmers growing cabbage cauliflower and calibrease as well as things like asparagus when in season. We work with Trewithen Farm daily for fresh local milk and cream. Our growers grow produce with good flavour and quality and we are always looking for something new. We also sell local Honey when the sun shines. Ask our staff for more information.
Local Produce
At J and S Downings the meat is from local farms some of which we have dealt with for 3 generations. The beef comes from traditional breeds, South Devons, Ruby Reds, Angus, Hereford, Galloways and Dexters. We only use local pork in our homemade sausages, hoggs and groats puddings. We sell hot pies and sausage rolls and all made from local pork and beef. Mike’s smoke house products are also stocked which are made at Kingsbridge. Local lamb is also sold from Lamerton and Milton Abbot. Poultry is sourced from mid Devon and Cornwall. Bacon comes from the Cornish Farmhouse Bacon Co in Whitestone Cornwall. Local game is sold when in season.
