Six crews tackle house blaze
Wednesday, 25 July 2012
SIX fire crews were called to help extinguish a fire at a property near Bridestowe on Friday evening, which destroyed most of the upper half of the building.
Crews from Okehampton, Launceston and Tavistock as well as a water bowser, attended the fire at around 7pm where a two-storey detached private house measuring 27 metres by eight metres was well alight.
All of the roof, 80% of the first floor and 50% of the ground floor was severely damaged by the fire. All residents were accounted for and no injuries were sustained.
Fire crews utilised a street hydrant, two miles away from the property, as well as open water from a light portable pump to extinguish the fire, using six breathing apparatus wearers, four hose-reel jets, two main jets and ladders for access.
The buildings surveyor from West Devon Borough Council attended as the building was deemed unstable.
The cause of the fire was believed to be accidental.
Crews remained at the property until the following morning, dampening down.
