OKEHAMPTON ended their season on a high note with another entertaining game at Simmons Park last Saturday.
With manager Stuart Cann made another appearance in goal, where he gave a solid performance all afternoon.
Axminster dominated the early exchanges and only poor finishing stopped them taking the lead in the first quarter of an hour. However, having weathered this early pressure, Argyle’s midfield began to get a grip on the game and on 33 minutes, good work by Darren Prouse set Frankie Nomah-Koneh up for a shot which was pushed out by the visiting keeper to Kel Fofala who made no mistake from 18 yards.
As the teams left the field for a well deserved half-time break, the 1-0 scoreline reflected the pattern of the first half fairly.
Argyle began to dominate affairs after the interval and on 53 minutes, Frankie Nomah-Koneh went on a run down the left, skilfully beating several Axminster defenders before squaring the ball to substitute Steve Kinsey who blasted the ball home from the edge of the box to double Argyle’s lead.
The visitors kept playing football however and forced themselves back into the game five minutes later when Ben Turner scored a fine goal. Within two minutes, Argyle had restored their two goal cushion, when Jonjo Fellows’ long free kick eluded the visiting keeper and fell to defender Mark Burdus who made no mistake from close in.
The game seemed to be over in the 71st minute when Darren Prouse crashed home a fourth goal for Okehampton from fully 30 yards, but Axminster had other ideas and reduced the arrears with a penalty from Alex Wheatley awarded for handball in the area.
Six minutes from time, a further penalty was awarded to the visitors after Cann was adjudged to have fouled a visiting forward and this was dispatched by Richard Challis to set up an exciting end to the match.
However, it was Okehampton who dominated the remainder of the match and they were unlucky not to extend their lead when the oustanding Nomah-Koneh saw a great effort rebound off the crossbar and onto the visitor’s goal-line.
In the dying seconds, the centre-forward saw another great shot rebound from the inside of the visitors’ post and there was to be no further scoring in what had been an entertaining game – a credit to both sides.
