Power company withdraw plans for windfarm

Thursday, 02 July 2009

SCOTTISH Power Renewables has announced this week that it is no longer looking at siting a windfarm at Chilla Moor.
The company said the wind power that would be generated was not enough to justify pursuing the project which has met with much opposition locally.
An action group CAT (Chilla Against Turbines) was set up when the energy company expressed an interest in putting a windfarm on Chilla Moor.
Scottish Power Renewables was looking into site accessibility, wind strength and speeds and infrastructure in the area.
A spokesperson for Scottish Power Renewables said this week: ‘We have taken on board what the action group has said but we are not walking away because of local opposition. We did the initial feasibility study and it has showed that the site is not big enough for us and the wind yield that would be produced would not be enough.’
CAT is made up of residents from Sheepwash, Highampton, Black Torrington, Chilla, Halwill and Beaworthy.
In March the group launched a ‘blimp’ balloon at Windrift Farm, Beara Cross, to demonstrate how the turbines would look in the landscape. They said the structures would dominate the landscape from far and wide.
Spokesperson for the group Alex Eyre said the group was delighted with the energy company’s decision not to go ahead and that the depth of local opposition had been taken on board.
‘We will certainly continue to be vigilant to any other applications like this coming forward,’ she said.
