240-mile ride completed in aid of CHSW

Thursday, 02 July 2009

FIFTY cyclists from across the region joined together over three days last month to complete an amazing journey in aid of a South West children’s charity.
Connecting up the site of Children’s Hospice South West’s proposed new hospice in Cornwall with the charity’s existing hospices in Devon and Somerset, the ride for Precious Lives riders pedalled to help raise vital funds for the charity.
Each clocking up 240 miles and around 17,000ft in hills, the 50 cyclists have also shown their strength as a team by raising around £50,000 in sponsorship for their efforts.
On Friday, June 19 the ride was officially started at the site for Little Harbour in Porthpean by Howard Rosevear, who generously gifted the land to CHSW.
Having spent the last three days cycling through some of the most beautiful scenery in the south west, it was then over the Clifton Suspension Bridge to cross the finish line in Bristol on Sunday, June 21, together.
Mark Butler from Callington said: ‘I really enjoyed myself, met some fantastic people, and helped to raise some money for a brilliant cause.’
Event organiser Trevor McCurdie, who was motivated to help the charity after a visit to Charlton Farm, said: ‘It’s great for all of us involved to be able to help Children’s Hospice South West continue to do its great work.
‘Thanks to everyone who made our first ever ride for Precious Lives such an amazing event. The ride was made by the spirit and willingness of all of those involved, whether they were on a bike, driving a van, or handing out drinks and flapjacks.’
Emma Lloyd, Children’s Hospice South West head of fundraising, said: ‘On behalf of all the children and families who use our services, I would like to say a huge thanks to Trevor, the ride for Precious Lives cyclists, the support team, and everyone who has sponsored them or helped out in some other way.  This is truly an amazing achievement.’
Donations are still being accepted online at www.rfpl.org.uk where you will also soon be able to register your interest for next year’s event.
