Carnival helps the community
Tuesday, 29 June 2010
COLYTON Carnival Committee has announced the beneficiaries of this year’s showpiece.
A statement issued by committee secretary Caroline Collier on Wednesday, June 23rd explained: “The recipients who will receive a share of Carnival Week profits are Colyton Football Club and Colyton Chamber of Feoffees Town Hall.
“The committee feels that these two projects will benefit the whole community and we hope that everyone will support us in raising funds during Carnival Week, September 4th-11th.”
It was also announced that the committee is searching for “young ladies” who would like to take part in the Carnival Queen and Princess competitions.
The competitions are decided by which entrant raises most money.
The winners of each competition will receive a dress plus 20 per cent of the amount they collect and will head the procession on carnival night, Saturday September 11th.
They will also be required to attend various events during Carnival Week and through the year.
The statement also said: “We would also like to hear from any young boys who would be interested in becoming Carnival Prince, the competition would be run along the same lines as the queen and princess competitions.
“The committee would also like to hear from some of our more ‘senior citizens’ who would be interested in becoming our Silver Queen.”
Anyone interested in any of the competitions is asked to contact Irene Hill on 01297 553972 or Angela Brooker on 01297 552151.
Regarding the chosen beneficiaries, the statement explained that the football club wants to purchase a pair of portable goals that can be used by players of all ages.
The cost of a pair of goals is about £2,000 and it has been decided to release the money in advance to allow youngsters to make use of the goals during summer.
The Chamber of Feoffees is looking to provide new and more comfortable chairs for the town hall.
