POLICE from Tavistock and Okehampton have praised residents in West Devon for listening to government advice and staying indoors last weekend.

Devon and Cornwall Police last week made an appeal for people to not make journeys to Dartmoor or picnic at local parks and follow government advice on social distancing and unnecessary travel to slow the spread of coronavirus.

Despite people congregating in large groups in some areas of the country, local police congratulated residents from the Tavistock and Okehampton areas for adhering to the rules set out by government to keep people safe.

PC Cathy Veale said: ‘Tavistock Police would like to say a big thank you to all those people who are clearly abiding by the Government guidance and only going out for essential reasons in order to prevent the spread of Coronavirus, to save lives and to protect the NHS.

‘We know people are listening and taking this matter seriously as recent patrols including areas of Dartmoor have been very quiet. Not driving out onto Dartmoor to exercise reduces the chances of serious road traffic collisions, putting an extra strain on the NHS who are already under great pressure.

‘We will continue to work with you to keep you safe.

‘We are undertaking regular foot and mobile patrols in our towns, villages and beauty spots offering guidance and reassurance.

‘During this time, we will be actively engaging with the public to explain the Government guidance and help everyone to play their part to protect our communities.’

While West Devon Neighbourhood Police Team sergeant Nathan Walker noted that the A30 on Saturday, April 4 was quiet: ‘Well done Okehampton for staying home, protecting the NHS and saving lives.’

Assistant chief constable Glen Mayhew said: ‘The vast majority of the public continue to be supportive of our actions and are adhering to restrictions and I am keen that we continue to operate a policing style that is one of engagement and encouragement.

‘New legislation has been introduced which provides the police with additional powers relating to Covid-19 restrictions.

‘This includes the option for officers to fine those refusing to adhere to Government guidance surrounding the observing of vital social distancing.

‘Unfortunately there is a minority who continue to ignore government instruction which is in place ultimately to save lives.

‘As we look to the bank holiday weekend I wish to be clear with our message which is stay at home and do not undertake travel that isn’t essential.

‘My officers will continue to be visible in our towns and cities and we will police the roads.’
