AN early start and a poor weather forecast did not deter the Cogs and Wheels Ladies' Morris side from celebrating May Day last Thursday. At 5.15am, the ladies, their musicians and intrepid supporters, all well wrapped up against the rain and cold, set off on foot from Belstone to the flagpole on the moor above the village. Once there, they greeted the grey dawn with an invocation to the spirits of the moor and the spring, before honouring them with the dance, Queen of the May. The 40-strong procession then made its way to the Nine Maidens stone circle, where they danced again despite the rain. Later in the day in Sticklepath, the rain eased off and the group performed in the village. At Finch Foundry, tribute was also made at a memorial tree to Sallie Reason, former squire of the side and a great inspiration to its members. Following a breakfast produced by member Margaret Allin and a glass of Pimms at the Devonshire Arms, the side finished the day at the King's Arms in South Zeal for more dancing.
