THE art of pressing apples was the name of the game at the Okehampton Community Garden Apple Day on Sunday.

Members of the community garden showed visitors to Upcott House how to hand press apples to make apple juice.

Visitors working hard to turn the apple press wheel were fortified with apple muffins and tasty lunchtime refreshments.

After lunch, the team made apple and blackberry jam and tasted other apple-flavoured conserves.

Kay Bickley, of the community garden, said: 'It was great to see whole families, that included grandparents, joining in chopping and crushing the apples and straining the juice. Visitors were still arriving at 3.45pm even though it started to rain. I call that a successful start to what we hope will develop into an even larger event on site next year.'
