THE Crafty Capers creative workshops for children will go ahead this summer despite the cancellation of the Okehampton and District Fireshow.

After a lack of support at its annual meeting in June, a unanimous decision was made by the fireshow committee that unless four new full committee members, including a chair, secretary and treasurer, and more supporters were found to undertake key roles in the show’s organisation, that there would be no option but for the charity to be formally closed and the fireshow event and associated arts and crafts activities in the community to cease to take place.

Despite the bleak future the committee has endeavoured to ensure that the arts and crafts activities in the community will take place this summer.

The Crafty Capers workshops introduce children to the world of art, design and costume. Youngsters learn designing and making techiniques in a practical hands-on environment.

Sessions include sculpture, painting, collage, rag rug, mask and lantern construction, mini scene and treasure map creation, not to mention spectacular dress and costume making that the team have developed over many years working on outdoor theatrical shows.

Children can learn innovative, experimental craft techniques using latex, willow, fabric and every conceivable item from the Crafty Caper treasure box of crafts.

The workshops will take place at South Zeal’s Victory Hall at the end of August, culminating in a fashion show during the Bank Holiday weekend.
