AFTER many years of failed applications and months of hard work in training, Angela Hawkins of Spreyton finally got the chance to take part in her first London Marathon back in April.

Angela completed the marathon in 5 hours and 58 minutes, running in unseasonably hot tempertures of 20c.

She said: 'After years of trying to take part in the London Marathon, this year I was successful in obtaining a place through the ballot system. I ran for Cancer Research UK in memory of my mum and other family members and friends I have lost.

'I had a really wonderful day, an experience I will never forget.  The crowds were amazing, the organisation was brilliant and the showers on the course were a god send!

'It was such a hot day I was grateful I was able to keep hydrated, reach the finish line and obtain my medal without the need of St John ambulance!'

Angela has raised a magnificent sum of more than £2,500 so far for the cancer charity. She paid tribute to everyone who helped her through her training, and donated to Cancer Research UK.

She said: 'I would like to give a big thank you to everyone for their generous donations.  This made all the hours of training  I've done and the miles I've covered worthwhile.  Thinking of the amount I am able to send Cancer Research helped to keep me going on the day also.'

'I would like to thank my family and friends for their support.  My husband Frank, son Joseph, daughter Vicki and her boyfriend James for accompanying me to London and cheering me on.  It was nice to see faces I knew at the twenty-four mile mark!'

Angela enjoyed her maiden effort at the marathon, and intends to keep running. She said: 'I've achieved my ambition to take part in the London Marathon so I will probably just stick to short runs now to keep fit.

'Perhaps Frank and his mate Richard will stop calling me Forrest — after Forrest Gump!'
