EXTRACTS from four different popular musicals — Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Les Misérables, Jesus Christ Superstar and Mamma Mia! — feature in Another Story Begins! at St Peter’s Church, North Tawton, which features many members of the community including the primary school.
The church production will be performed from today (Thursday) until Saturday (October 17) and is being directed by Rev Rita Bullworthy, assistant minister, North Tawton Group of Churches, Whiddon Mission Community.
Rev Bullworthy said: ‘The success and popularity of staging Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat just over two years ago, resulted in our decision to stage extracts from the musicals, but, as a church production, we wanted it to do more than just stage musicals.
‘For this reason the songs chosen talk of justice and injustice, poverty, hopes and dreams. And dreams are the thread running through several of the songs from the shows.
‘The cast and stage crew include church members, members of the local community and children from the local primary school. In all, more than 60 people of varying ages are involved.’
Children from North Tawton Community Primary School sing Let it Go from the film Frozen during the show.
All proceeds from the performances will be divided between Children’s Hospice South West and Hospiscare.
Rev Bullworthy said that as a result of previous and current performances, new friendships had been made, new talents had been revealed and many members had found new, and renewed confidence in themselves.
She added that the stage crew would be using the latest technology for lighting with some amazing effects throughout the show and said that staging Joseph previously encouraged some members to embark on theatre studies at university and join local amateur drama groups.
