Foxhole Stars 4

Okehampton Argyle 0

THIS was always going to be a difficult match for Argyle with Foxhole looking for revenge for their 8-0 defeat at Simmons Park earlier in the season and playing their first game under new manager Tony MacKellar.

As it was, they gained a deserved and easy victory against an Okehampton side that just did not get going all afternoon. Due to the weather, Argyle had not played for three weeks and due to the frozen all weather pitch in Okehampton, they had been unable to train for the past two weeks. This showed in a lacklustre performance from which their usual good teamwork was absent.

Argyle were still difficult to break down and it was not until the 34th minute that Foxhole took the lead when Cameron Palin released Richard Griffin who beat Okes' keeper Harry Geering with a fierce drive.

Foxhole kept forcing the pace and increased their lead on 63 minutes when Geering did well to parry Adam Holland's shot but Ben Douglas following up scored from close range.

Argyle brought on manager Stuart Cann for the last ten minutes but this was to no avail as Foxhole added further goals from substitute Bobbylee Johns on 81 minutes and another from Griffin in injury time.

Foxhole deserved their win and outplayed Argyle on the day.

Okehampton's closest efforts were from Ben Ferguson and Ben Waters who both hit the woodwork with free kicks, but had it not been for an outstanding display of goalkeeping by Harry Geering, the score could have been higher.

Sidbury Utd Reserves 0

ARGYLE Reserves ended their recent losing streak with this fine team performance at Simmons Park.

The first half was an even affair between two teams with similar league records and both sides created chances which they did not finish. The only goal came after 20 minutes when a lovely move saw John Coakley put through on the edge of the Sidbury box. Showing great unselfishness, the Argyle striker played a perfect pass to Chris Hollands who fired home a strong shot from the left.

Argyle brought on defender Graham Soby in the second half and he had a fine game, his presence instilling confidence in the players around him.

Okehampton increased their lead when John Coakley beat the visitors' offside trap to race through and fire home on 60 minutes.

Argyle now began to dominate and the hard working Ricky Drew scored the best goal of the game with a tremendous drive from the edge of the box giving the Sidbury keeper no chance. With ten minutes left Argyle brought on Paul Prouse up front and he and Coakley gave the visitors defence a tough time. It was Coakley who added the fourth when he used his pace to break through a square away defence before rifling the ball home to complete the scoring.

This was a great team performance from the Argyle second string, who were backstopped by a near perfect performance from keeper Adam Cann who preserved their lead in the first half with a string of fine saves, when it looked as if the visitors might force their way back into the game.

That the game was able to go ahead at all was thanks in no small part to committee members Gloria and Gerry Smith who had spent all of Saturday morning cleaning up the changing rooms after split pipes due to the cold spell had flooded them. Also thanks are due to JP Plumbing and Building Services of Exbourne, who traced and repaired no less than seven burst pipes at very short notice to allow the game to take place.

n Argyle thirds put in a classy performance away to Cheriton Fitzpaine seconds to win 3-1 victory with goals from Brad Ausden (2) and John Filbey.
