Okehampton Argyle 3

Exeter University 3

OKEHAMPTON thought they had done enough to take all three points from this encounter. After superbly fighting back from an early two goal deficit, but the students netted a dramatic equaliser with only two minutes remaining to give themselves a deserved share of the spoils.

Argyle played some good football against a fit and skilful University side, but missed the suspended Matt Mortimer's height and power in the air in the middle of defence.

The University settled into their game more quickly than Argyle and took the lead after only five minutes when Jacob Neilson was given far too much room allowing him to fire home a low shot into the corner of the net from 20 yards.

Argyle came back at the students and put some good moves together down the left but a poor defensive clearance after 32 minutes fell to a right sided University player who switched the ball across to Mattias Marriott on the left. His deep cross was firmly headed home by Ben Nash. This gave Argyle a mountain to climb but they stuck to the task and continued to play good football and just before half they clawed themselves back into the match. Ben Williams' free kick was deftly glanced past the keeper by Steve Kinsey to reduce the arrears.

After the interval, the Argyle enjoyed a 30 minute spell of domination although the students always looked dangerous on the break.

The home side levelled the game with a superb goal on 63 minutes. New signing Dave Youlden, who had just come on as a substitute, brilliantly volleyed home Luke Alden's corner from the edge of the box – an unstoppable effort.

On 78 minutes, it fell to another substitute to give Argyle the lead. Ricky Wooldridge had replaced Steve Madge to give some fresh legs in midfield and he used his speed to get round the back of the University defence and fire home an angled drive.

It looked as if Okehampton had done enough but with two minutes to go, Marriott fired in another deep cross from the left and once again Nash rose to head home a great equaliser.

This was a disappointing final result for Argyle but they showed great character to come back from two goals down and so nearly took the game. Alex Wren had another fine game in midfield but overall it was a good team performance once again.
