Carlsberg South West Peninsula division one East
Bickleigh 1
Okehampton Argyle 2
ARGYLE won this vital six pointer at Bickleigh to move off the bottom of the Peninsula League.
This match was about attitude rather than skill and Okehampton showed plenty of graft and spirit throughout the game and ended up deserved winners on a difficult playing surface.
Argyle had the better of the first half and the game was only eight minutes old when Frankie Nomah-Koneh produced a superb run across the Bickleigh box taking him past three defenders before squaring the ball for Jonjo Fellows to fire home, although his shot was helped into the net by a deflection off a Bickleigh defender.
Argyle continued to produce the better chances and were unfortunate to have an appeal for a penalty turned down when Frankie Nomah-Koneh appeared to be hauled down by a Bickleigh defender in the box.
A few minutes later, a good Bickleigh move brought a fine save out of Argyle goalkeeper Harry Geering from a fierce shot on the edge of the box.
On the stroke of half-time, Argyle deservedly extended their lead when Steve Williams used his speed to get behind the Bickleigh defence only to be brought down by home defender Ben White. The reliable Steve Kinsey made no mistake with the spot kick.
The second half was only ten minutes old when Bickleigh threw themselves a lifeline. Luke Passmore's corner had the Argyle defence dithering and Jordan Copp forced the ball home at the far post. The game was spoilt after this by two dismissals. Firstly, Bickleigh's Kieran Rappo was red carded for disputing a free kick awarded to Okehampton, then Argyle's Matt Mortimer who had had a fine game in the centre of defence was sent off 12 minutes from time after a foul tackle on a Bickleigh defender.
Both teams did their best to ensure victory, but Okehampton came closest when Steve Williams outpaced the Bickleigh defence only to slice his shot hopelessly wide with only the keeper to beat.
All in all this was a fine team performance from Okehampton with Matt Sanders, Matt Mortimer, Dan Johnston and Frankie Nomah-Koneh outstanding.
