Community
AT the end of each Parliamentary session there is a pre-recess debate in which MPs can speak on any issue. I decided to publically thank some of my constituents who work especially hard to support their local community.
Some say that in today's less rooted world, community has become degraded by its ever more fragmented and transitory nature, but when I spoke in the debate last week I said that in Devon I saw little evidence of this, that in my towns and villages 'community' is alive and whole.
I thanked Sue Eales from Ashburton, a special lady, who continues to give the gift of a loving home to the children she fosters. I highlighted the commitment of the Royal British Legion across Central Devon — a fine organisation that is both the custodian of remembrance and an active support for those who bear the hardships of war — of service to our country.
I thanked Brian Warren (from near Crediton), who has until recently run Farm Crisis Network, a voluntary organisation providing pastoral support to farmers, many of whom continue to face hard times. I saluted the people of Buckfastleigh and Kennford who rallied around when many were hit by the floods.
I spoke of my constituent Mary Stephenson who has worked with such dedication on offender rehabilitation and family support and has kindled in me greater activity in this area.
Others I thanked included Sally Hordern for her tireless work in securing a new community store for Exbourne, Chris Marson for his internet roll-out and community store in Northlew, Christopher Gibbs for the huge support he has given to Tedburn St Mary. I thanked also all those involved in vital youth work including Room 13 in Okehampton. To all of them and to the many others — 'Thank you.'
