AN Okehampton man has chosen to mark his 70th birthday by donating more than 2,000 daffodil bulbs, which have been planted in Simmons Park.

John Pestridge, who is an almost daily visitor to the park, donated the bulbs for the 100m long strip on the higher side of the main path, on the approach to the water gardens.

Dog owner Mr Pestridge, a former aviation and motoring copy writer, said he could see 'no better way' of celebrating and marking a milestone birthday than by providing something the community could enjoy for years to come.

Park keeper David Whitfield, who planted the bulbs along with his colleague Colin Brown, said: 'These bulbs will make a very vivid spring time display and complement the numerous recently planted daffodils on the opposite side of the river.'

Okehampton town councillor Christine Marsh said: 'Simmons Park is an asset to the community but keeping pace with ever rising costs is a never ending battle.

'The purchase of the bulbs will go on a long way to helping Simmons Park remain a continually improving facility for all to enjoy.'
