Devon Intermediate cup

Kingsbridge 22

Okehampton 33

IN fine conditions initial exchanges were relatively lacklustre. However on 15 minutes the game sparked into life when the hosts went over following a powerful run from their number 8 to make it 5-0.

Direct from the restart Paul Lawrence re-gathered possession and a slick offload to Simon Cox enabled him to find Kevin Dennis to scoot under the posts for the equaliser. Carl Poynton made no mistake with the conversion and the Okes held a lead they would never relinquish. On 34 minutes this was increased when Luke Honeychurch was the beneficiary of a slick handling move which saw the ball moved out to the wing and back inside. He dotted down and Poynton converted to bring the score to 14-5.

The hosts were able to add a penalty before the interval but at 14-8 down and facing the wind they were by now distinct underdogs. The visitors increased their lead when quick hands saw the ball shipped into the hands of the predatory Craig Dennis who showed good pace and power to score Okes' third try. Poynton again converted to make it 21-8 to the Okes. Ten minutes there was the best try of the match. Again, a sweeping backs move saw the ball moved to flying winger Rob Fishleigh. He took the outside route and slipped a delicate pass inside to the supporting Kevin Dennis for him to go over for his second score. At 26-8 Okes' took their collective foot off the gas and the powerful Kings' forwards were able to grind out another try.

Any hopes of a comeback were short lived however, as replacement centre Tom Powell swooped on a handling error to go over for try number five. Poynton completed Okes' scoring for the day and although the hosts scored a converted try with the final play of the match a tricky-looking cup tie had been successfully negotiated.
