OKEHAMPTON and District Community Transport Group is to play its part in promoting community transport across Devon.

Devon's Community Transport Awareness Day is on Wednesday, October 9. Okehampton's transport group will play its part with a coffee morning on Saturday, October 12 to promote its own services.

The Okehampton group and 59 other schemes provide voluntary car schemes in Devon. The purpose of these is to provide lifts for frail, elderly people and those with disabilities who find access to public transport difficult.

Transport is provided by volunteers using their own cars to give access to appointments, shops and other amenities.

Demand for these services continues to grow, putting pressure on the band of volunteers who give up their time and the organisations that co-ordinate the service.

All the schemes are always looking for people who would like to make a real difference to people who are experiencing difficulties getting out and about. Travel expenses are paid to the driver at a rate of 45p per mile.
