VOLUNTEERS are being sought to help save the unique collection of police memorabilia stored at Okehampton Police Station.
In the midst of cutbacks, current volunteers at the heritage and learning resources centre have decided to set up the Friends group for the collection .
Jan Tatham, volunteer at the centre, said: 'What we are really after is like-minded people who have a real interest in the history of the police and would like to help preserve this unique collection for the future.'
The collection includes historical artefacts such as wonderful decorated truncheons dating back to the 1800s, along with many photographs and ledgers containing records of police officers from as far back as the middle of the 19th century.
The collection is not usually open to the public, but to encourage local people to come forward and help preserve these unique items, an open day will be held at the police station archive on Monday April 11.
The day will start at mid day and those interested in joining the Friends will have the opportunity to see the wonderful collection and learn about the work done by the volunteers. There will also be a chance to speak with the curator, followed by a short meeting for those who would like to join as a Friend.
Coffee and nibbles will be provided.
