HOSPISCARE is inviting people to remember their loved ones this Christmas at a service being held at Fairplace Church, Okehampton tomorrow (Friday).
Hospiscare's uplifting services of light will take place across Exeter, mid and east Devon during November and December, giving people the chance to honour those they have lost at what can be a difficult time of year.
The services are open to anyone wishing to remember someone special.
Those attending the service, which begins at 7pm, will be given a candle to light in memory of their loved one which will illuminate the altar during prayers, readings and hymns.
Hospiscare Chaplain Nigel Mason said: 'Hospiscare invites us all to remember loved ones who have died and invites everyone to attend the service of light where candles will shine brightly in their memory.'
The services of light have been a source of comfort to many since they began in 2001 and are often a chance to talk and share thoughts with Hospiscare Support groups as well as Hospiscare nurses and members of staff who attend the services.
Hospiscare Support Group co-ordinator Barry Carpenter said: 'The run up to Christmas can be a difficult time for those who have been bereaved; we are told to have a wonderful and happy Christmas but, for some, it is a time that brings to mind how much loved ones are missed.
'Our services are there to recognise this and give comfort.'
As well as the service of light, Hospiscare is also inviting people to honour lost friends and family by recording their name in a book of memories and dedicating a light to them on the tree of light, which will be lit every evening at Exeter Cathedral Green from early December until January 6, 2014.
Barry said: 'The tree will be shining every evening at dusk with the beautiful lights given in dedication.
'Our book of memories can be viewed at every church holding a service of light for us during November and December, as well as at the cathedral until twelfth night on January 6.'
