Amateur photographer Chris Goodman had a shock last week when he was out taking pictures — he spotted a small tornado across the moor.
Chris, from Okehampton, was out walking last Tuesday between 8.30pm and 9pm when he saw the natural phenomenon over Dartmoor.
Chris could not quite believe his eyes: 'I was taking a walk on the moor just up from Station Road — I go up every now and again to take photos.
'I went up there to get a photograph of the sunset, as I thought the rays breaking through the cloud over the moor would make a good picture.
'I just suddenly saw this tornado. It touched down for about thirty seconds or so, and you could see the air swirling round and the dust kicking up.
'Apparently, there are more tornadoes per square mile in Britain than any other country.'
On average, 33 tornadoes are reported annually in the UK, which has the highest number of reported tornadoes per square miles than any other country. However, the tornadoes are usually rated between F0 and F2, the lowest level of tornado intensity on the Fujita scale.
