PLOUGH Sunday took place at St Andrew’s in Sampford Courtenay last Sunday.

Plough Sunday is celebrated with a special service of Holy Communion, with help from members of Winkleigh Young Farmer’s Club.

Garry Stoneman pushed the ancient horse drawn plough, thought to have been the last one in use in the village, up the aisle.

Lucy Capron carried a sack of wheat and Nicola Stoneman carried a sample of local soil, all of which were blessed by the Revd Rita Bullworthy.

David Weeks read the poem ‘God Speed the Plough’ and Joe Stoneman read the lesson.

Afterwards the choir and congregation gathered in The Square when the Rev Nick Weldon blessed the tractors and ploughs gathered there.

These were David Weeks’ five furrow Fendt, Joe Stoneman’s three furrow John Deere and Malcolm Craig’s two furrow Massey Ferguson.
