OVER 130 years of practical conservation work and campaigning to preserve Dartmoor's unique landscape and heritage is being celebrated at the Museum of Dartmoor Life in Okehampton this summer. The museum is hosting an exhibition by the Dartmoor Preservation Association (DPA) which tells the fascinating story of why the organisation was founded in 1883, its subsequent history and current work. Displays range from 19th century documents to recent activities such as the award winning Dartmoor Cairns archaeology project. The Dartmoor Preservation Association, DPA, is an independent member organisation that works closely with the Dartmoor National Park Authority to protect the archaeology and ecology of the moor. Its members are active in helping preserve artefacts and improve habitats, as well as maintaining a watchful eye on proposed development in the area. Andrew Thompson, manager of the Museum of Dartmoor Life said: 'We are very pleased to be working in partnership with the Dartmoor Preservation Association. For over 100 years the DPA has played a pivotal role in preserving Dartmoor's cultural and natural heritage. It has itself become an important part of the moor's history which the Museum of Dartmoor Life exists to celebrate and conserve.' James Paxman, the DPA's chief executive said: 'We are delighted that the Museum of Dartmoor Life is hosting this exhibition about the DPA. 'The founders of the association were far-sighted individuals who understood the value of the open landscape of Dartmoor and the ancient treasures that it holds. They were the earliest guardians of the moor and successive generations of DPA members have continued their work, helping to ensure that Dartmoor's charms will be sustained and enjoyed by all.' The exhibition runs from July 8 to July 31. Entry to the museum costs £2.50 for adults, £1 for children and students and £6 families. Season tickets are available to local people allowing free repeat visits throughout the year.
