A SIXTH form student gave a presentation at Hatherleigh Rotary Club on her forthcoming working trip to Uganda.

Claris Joplin from Shebbear College will travel to Uganda to work and meet primary and secondary school pupils. Her trip will include teaching English to the pupils and two days of manual labour.

Miss Joplin said each member of the team had to raise their own sponsorship for the trip — around £1,500 per person— and gave examples of the ways in which team members were raising the money.

She said she was excited at the prospect of being able to help others less fortunate that herself.

Former club member Dave Simpson is trying to raise a considerable amount of money for the NHS by doing a sponsored parachute jump, which had to be postponed on a number of occasions due to bad weather.

Mr Simpson spoke briefly to give the club an update on his son's health after he suffered a recent serious illness and is looking forward to a holiday with his wife and son.

The Rotary Club also welcomed visitors from Holsworthy Rotary Club, Phil Sluggett and Richard.
