I WOULD like to briefly clarify a couple of points raised by Mr Lucas' letter May 4, regarding waste collections in West Devon.
Non-recyclable refuse should be presented on the kerbside contained inside a sack, as our website and literature recommend. Non-recyclable waste should not be presented loose in the bin. We apologise for any confusion that the well-intentioned crew member may have caused.
Regarding food waste, we whole-heartedly support Mr Lucas' suggestion to either wrap it in newspaper or kitchen roll or leave it loose in the container. The food waste is treated at a local plant where it produces electricity for the national grid, and these methods allow it to break down more easily in the process.
Cllr Robert Oxborough,
Chairman of West Devon Borough Council's Environment and Community Committee
