OKEHAMPTON Golf Club is gearing up to celebrate its centenary this year with a series of special events.

The golf club was opened in 1913 by Okehampton's greatest benefactor Sydney Simmons.

The club is planning a series of special events to commemorate the occasion, the centrepiece being the Centenary Festival Week from July 13 to July 19.

At a ceremony attended by members of the club, David Warren was installed as the 2013 centenary club captain. He will be supported during this milestone year by the ladies' captain Mrs Jane Warren and seniors' captain John Leonard.

David said: 'Okehampton Golf Club is part of Okehampton's sporting heritage and we will be celebrating our 100th birthday in style.

'Golf is a new Olympic sport and we can offer everyone, young or old, the opportunity to give it a try in a friendly and relaxed environment.'
