Okehampton Columbines Ladies 3

Morgarow Ladies 5

Okehampton travelled to Penzance to play Morgarow (St Ives) with several regular players unavailable.

The visitors started confidently with swift sure passing that was unlucky not to lead to a score in the first five minutes. Morgarow soom came back to score the first goal of the match.

Okehampton were not daunted and close co-operation, particularly between Kim Davey and Jo Moppett on the forward line, evened up the score with Jo Moppett taking her first goal.

Viv Weatherington, Okehampton's efficient inner, was limited by an ankle injury and with no substitute available was prevented from her usual flexible play that opens up the field.

Okehampton's defence struggled to ensure total coverage. Morgarow tended to attack in droves making it hard to cover all angles and scored again when their forward was left with plenty of space and goalie Sophie Whiteley was forced way out of the goal to meet her.

At half time Okehampton regrouped and agreed the need to hold their ground against the physical presence of Morgarow's assertive play. Morgarow, using a squad of rolling subs, kept up intense pressure, especially on their right wing and it was the skillful and untiring efforts of Jane Jones and Sarah Jones that kept them at bay.

Finally however they broke through and again were able to take advantage of Okehampton's defence with greater numbers to get their third goal. They broke through again to make it 4-1.

Jo Moppett then took advantage of the almost total commitment to attack by Morgarow, to take a solo run right through the defence to score Okehampton's second goal. Encouraged by this, making more use of the wider field, Okehampton took the ball to the edge of Morgarow's circle and Kim Davey slipped the ball to Jo Moppett for her third goal.

As the remaining minutes slipped away the play became more frantic and less careful on both sides as the game was again up for grabs. Morgarow broke through again to score their fifth in the last few minutes of the game.
