OKEHAMPTON'S mayor is to climb aboard an exercise bike for six hours this Saturday to support his two mayoral charities. Cllr the Rev Mike Davies will be in Red Lion Yard on April 19 from 8am, pedalling on his exercise bike to raise money for Tor Support Services and Get Changed Theatre Company. The mayor will have a collection bucket, and is hoping passers-by will show some support and make a donation to the two charities. Once he has completed his challenge, he will draw the winners of the Chamber of Trade's golden bunny trail at 2.30pm. The mayor said: 'I have been trying to sneak in as much training as possible although this has been difficult due to other meetings. 'I am just hoping that with the combination of encouragement on the day from passers-by and the thought of the need for funding for the two charities, it will keep me going. I managed to squeeze in a three-hour training session a few days ago and I could  hardly walk. 'Get Changed has provided an excellent service for several years in Okehampton. With funding cuts and grants not being so readily available they are desperately in need of additional funds. 'Tor Support Services is not so well known. This is mainly due to the confidential work that they are involved with. As mayor and a church minister I have become aware of many issues in Okehampton that are not seen by the majority. TSS does a fantastic job in helping the younger members of community.' Get Changed works with adults with learning disabilities and mental health problems using role play and performing arts techniques to develop life skills and confidence, promote social inclusion and empower people to realise their full potential.  Tor Support Services provides free, confidential counselling to five to 25 year olds in Okehampton and the surrounding parishes. Volunteers to help collect money and do half-hour stints on the bike are welcome. If you can help, call 01837 659841.
