BLIND fundraiser Dave Heeley passed through Okehampton last Wednesday on his epic Top2Toe fundraiser — cycling 750 miles and running ten marathons in ten days from John O'Groats to Land's End.

Each day Dave started with a marathon run of 26.2 miles, followed by a tandem cycle to the next destination, with an average 75 mile cycle planned for each day.

Dave set himself the gargantuan challenge in an effort to raise £100,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support, which is celebrating its centenary year.

His journey started from John O'Groats on August 10.

Dave was greeted by Okehampton mayor Maureen McDonald at the Betty Cottles Inn last week, where he stayed before setting off for Bridestowe and Lewdown next morning.

This is not the first big challenge Dave has set himself to raise money for charity.

He said: '2008 saw me become the first blind person in the world to run seven marathons in seven days on seven continents. It was a fantastic adventure and also something to enjoy.

'We raised a few bob for a charity last time.

'Hopefully £100,000 is going to be raised, and we hope that money will help an awful lot of people in some way.

'Cancer's effects touch all of us. I lost both my father and father-in-law, and very recently it claimed the life of a long time friend.'
