PLANS for a major housing development in Okehampton have undergone big changes following criticism earlier this year.

Hannard Developments have revealed outline plans for 300 houses and a new primary school on land off Crediton Road and adjacent to Chichacott Road.

In March, the developers showed their outline plans for 150 new houses and a new primary school on a portion of the land.

Councillors from Okehampton Town Council and Okehampton Hamlets Parish Council criticised the plans for having a single road provide access for the housing estate and primary school.

The new plans have a second access point on Crediton Road, formed with a roundabout.

The new plans also include a site for a shop, like an express supermarket.

A consultation leaflet has been circulated to more than 600 local properties providing feedback from the March exhibition, looking at key points raised.

Those who received the cards were invited to to complete a comment card sharing their thoughts.

A spokesperson for Hannard Developments said: 'Despite the local Highways Authority raising no objection in principle to the original single extrance and exit proposals, we have reviewed our upcoming application.

'By increasing the number of homes to 300 — which would have come forward as part of the wider site allocation for 900 homes anyway — we have managed to include an additional access and exit point, which in turn will provide a junction with the new Crediton Road and Exeter Road link road.

'As well as this, our application will also now include a shop, which will benefit not only new residents but the existing community as well.

'We are keen to know what people think of our revisions and encourage people to complete the comment cards provided.'

The developer has a freephone information service open during office hours to respond to community enquiries.
