A DRIVER was trapped and had to be rescued by fire crews after his vehicle collided with a tree on the A386I at Pressland, Hatherleigh, in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Two fire crews from Hatherleigh and Okehampton attended after a call from police requesting help just after 3am.

The male driver was trapped by his legs in the van, and crews worked to stabilise the vehicle before extricating him.

First aid was also rendered by fire crews while they awaited the arrival of land and air ambulance.

It was later decided the man should be airlifted to hospital.
