OKEHAMPTON and District Community Transport Group is crying out for volunteers, as it struggles to cope with increasing demand.

The organisation is specifically looking for more drivers who live in Okehampton, and the Lewdown and Chagford areas, though they welcome drivers from a wider area.

Group co-ordinator Sue Wonnacott said: 'We are desperately in need of more Okehampton drivers for our voluntary car scheme. We also need drivers willing to undergo training to drive our two wheelchair accessible vehicles.

'We are also looking for drivers in the Lewdown and Chagford areas. Our requests for transport are increasing each week and if we are to keep up with the demand we need to recruit more drivers.'

The group provides transport to hospital and medical appointments, and social visits. They pay their drivers 45p per mile and also indemnify your no claims bonus and policy excess.

Volunteers can spare as much time as they like, from a couple of hours a month upward. Drivers with relevant experience can also volunteer to drive the wheelchair accessible vehicle on trips.
