NEW members are being sought for the Okehampton Local History Society which meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm in the Ockment Centre hall.
At its next meeting on October 13 a talk will be given by Jeremy Pearson, who is curator and historic properties advisor at the National Trust's Killerton House. He will be speaking on Exeter and West Country silver.
Although goldsmiths had been active in Exeter since the 13th Century, it was not until 1575 that they formed a guild and started to put the assay mark (a Roman X) on their silver.
At the society's meeting last month Ron Carter, now living locally but who spent his working life in Harrods making leather goods, gave a history of the famous London store.
Anyone interested in joining the society can contact the secretary Malcolm Francis-Lang on 01837 840158. Non-members may attend meetings at a charge of £2 per person.
