OKEHAMPTON Town Council has pledged to make Simmons Park car park 'Free after Three' during December in an effort to support businesses during the festive period.

Town councillors discussed the issue of offering shoppers free parking at a policy meeting on Monday.

Following a vote by councillors to support the move, car parking charges will be waived after 3pm in the car park every day throughout December, including Edwardian Evening on December 6.

The move is an effort to increase footfall in the town centre and support local business, in particular the smaller traders, during the festive period. The council made the same pledge in 2011.

Cllr Christine Marsh said: 'Last year we offered this free parking and I think we should do so again as the economy has not picked up, and a move like this could help the town's businesses. It did not heavily affect our revenues last year, and it would not do so this year.'

Chair of the committee Cllr Terry Cummings said: 'Personally, I think this is an excellent idea, and anything we can do to support businesses is welcome.'

The council also discussed talking to businesses about the move to promote the free parking, and will contact the chamber of trade to discuss the promotion of the 'Free after Three' scheme.
