TOURISM and local businesses could receive a festive boost this winter thanks to a Christmas attraction at Okehampton Station.

During November and December, the Dartmoor Railway will host a magical train trip bringing to life the Polar Express story. Written by Chris Van Allsburg, the story was turned into a hit animation film in 2004.

The attraction has been run in America for several years, but the Okehampton Polar Express marks the first time it is gracing the UK.

The service made its bow during a special first run at Okehampton Station last Wednesday.

Ed Ellis, president of British American Railways, said: 'We are honoured to bring the Polar Express train experience exclusively to the UK.

'We have produced this event in America for several years and have learned how the hit movie's popularity impacts the ride's popularity and fun.'

Roger Webster, general manager of Dartmoor Railway, said: 'The Polar Express will put the Dartmoor Railway on the map and provide excellent Christmas entertainment for both local people and visitors to the area.

'It will be an exciting trip with the trains very well decorated, carol singing and all the performances.

'Not only should it put the railway on the map, but it should also help put Okehampton on the map. We are hoping that it will attract people coming from a long way away to visit the town. It could help accommodation providers, businesses and the town in general.'

Departing from Okehampton Station, the Polar Express makes a mystical one-hour round-trip to Bow, visiting the North Pole.

The characters of the story come to life, with the conductor punching children's golden train tickets, chefs dancing and delivering hot chocolate and cookies, and the doubting hobo wandering through the train.

The story is read aloud, and music from the film, starring Tom Hanks, plays along in the background. Upon arriving at the North Pole, Santa climbs aboard the train with his singing elves, handing out silver bells for each girl and boy aboard.

Children are encouraged to wear their pyjamas to keep in the spirit of the story, and passengers in first class will receive a commemorative mug to take home.

Okehampton Station will be decked out in Christmas decorations, and there will be a special Polar Express gift shop to buy souvenirs.

The adventure begins on November 19, with dates throughout November and December. The train departs at 5pm and 7.30pm on most dates.
