A SHORT film about communication difficulties has been produced by people using Okehampton's Puzzle Tree day service. The film was premiered in Okehampton's Merlin Cinema on Thursday December 9.

'Dr Wot — Total Communication Time Lord' highlights some of the problems people with communication difficulties face. Tasks many of us find routine are often more difficult for those with communication difficulties, and the film gives audiences a thought-provoking yet light-hearted insight into some of the real experiences of Puzzle Tree service users.

People from the service have been involved in every stage of the film's production, from writing scripts and designing props to acting and filming.

The film examined a number of scenarios where simple changes could make a massive difference to those with communication difficulties.

Devon County Council's Puzzle Tree service supports adults with learning disabilities, and the film was produced in partnership with the local co-ordinator of a Devon-wide project called Total Communication Now, which helps people overcome communication problems.

The film was shown with the kind support of Merlin Cinemas and Okehampton Town Council.

Support Worker and director of the film Vicky Hooper said: 'This half an hour film only touches the surface of the problems faced by people with communication difficulties. By and large, these difficulties can be overcome through incredibly simple and cheap, yet effective, measures.'

One scenario saw John using a local bus service and being dropped off at the wrong destination. Dr Wot and his beautiful assistant Rachel helped John by providing him with a picture card, showing his destination and aiding communication with the driver.

Vicky Hooper said: 'We now want to create a longer and more professional film that can be used as a communication training tool in the future.

'The feedback we've had from people has inspired us and made us realise the potential this film has. Part of our plan is to get funding from businesses and charities in the area for help with this project, which we feel will really benefit the whole community.'
