ALL Saints Church Hall in Okehampton is to be transformed into the Folk Café for the first time this weekend as part of a new venture for Wren Music.
The Folk Café is an event somewhere between a formal concert and an informal folk club.
There will be invited guests from all over the UK, some members of the Wren Band and a local singer being given an extended floor spot, plus opportunities for other individuals.
Wren's director of music Paul Wilson said: 'What we are trying to do with this event is to help local singers grow from a pub type sing around, which is a fabulous way for people to sing, but sometimes singers need the challenge of preparing a more developed programme, which is why we've designed the event as we have.
'They will also have the opportunity to be on the same bill as top notch professionals.'
Future visiting guests include Stew Simpson — a fine singer exploring his north-east mining roots and singer songwriter Ann Lister, most noted for writing the song Icarus, made famous by Martin Simpson.
The first Folk Café on Saturday, January 25, features Wren founders Marilyn Tucker and Paul Wilson, joined by upcoming folk duo Jon Dyer and Alfie Gidley, with featured local singer Trev Munkenbeck.
Entry is £5, teas and coffees are available but guests can bring their own alcohol and refreshments.
The event starts at 7.30pm, with tickets on the door. For more information call Wren Music on 01837 53754.
