THE Baring-Gould Folk Weekend makes its return tomorrow (Friday) packed with music and entertainment and a programme of activities especially for families and children.
This year's festival, running from Friday, October 24 to Sunday, October 26 has a mixture of events, some things you can sit and listen to or others where you can get involved.
On Saturday Wren Music is planning a special instrument treasure trail through the town, with folk instruments in shop windows. There will be a £20 prize for the winning entry. Entry forms are available from Rockin' Beads.
The main music day for families is Sunday, which starts with a special event at 10am, 'Down In Granny's Yard' led by Wren founders Paul Wilson and Marilyn Tucker. Wren will be sharing playground games of yesteryear as well as listen to some traditional children's songs.
At 1.30pm there is the annual conker heats in Red Lion Yard, for all ages and the winner of the free competition receives a trophy and a cash prize.
The final of the conkers is held during the family ceilidh, a dance, where you get taught how to join in with the dancing, in the Charter Hall at 2pm. The winning Instrument Trail winner will be drawn at this event.
After dancing you can sit and listen in the Youth Hub concert featuring professional festival artists and local young singers and musicians at All Saints Church Hall from 4pm.
The Baring-Gould Folk weekend has been going since 1999, when it started out in Lewdown and Bratton Clovelly, but grew out of those small villages and re-located to Okehampton.
As well as all the music events there is the centrepiece festival feast catered by professional chef Shaun McCahearty on Saturday evening. Weekend tickets are still available, with the offer of buy three get a fourth free, and there are special family tickets available as well.
