IN division one of the Okehampton and district table tennis league North Wyke playing their first match of the season were at home to Dartmoor Fringe. Tom Misselbrook did well to beat Andy Moppett and Keith Smith but the Fringe went on to win the match 8-2, Peter Richardson scoring a fine maximum with Andy and Keith winning two each, Peter and Keith winning the doubles against Tom and Jill Dilley.

In their next match North Wyke were away to Tavistock A who were unstoppable, winning their third 10-0 victory of the season.

In the same divisiion The J team played Tavistock B. Martin Fowler put Tavistock ahead when he beat Naomi Jackson.

The J Team stepped up a gear winning the next six to go 6-1 ahead before Martin beat Frank Cockburn for a 6-2.

John Down having won two singles had to work hard to complete his maximum with a hard fought five leg win against Dave Edwards, finally winning 11-9, 9-11, 11-6, 7-11, 11-2; Naomi also beat Dave 11-9, 16-14, 10-12, 6-11, 11-9. There was another five leg win for Frank Cockburn against Colin Brooker, Frank winning 9-11, 12-10, 11-9, 9-11, 11-7. John and Naomi won the doubles against Martin and Colin for a fine 8-2 win for The J Team.

Dartmoor Fringe were at home to Okehampton A who had a father and son J Clifford (senior and junior) playing their first games in the Okehampton League. Joe junior did well to win all his singles as did Barry Vaughan, a regular Oke A player, and both played in the doubles taking the 100% record of Peter Richardson and Ian Smith. Andy Moppet, Peter and Ian all won one singles for the Fringe, for a 7-3 win for Oke A. Bridestowe were at home to new team Anchorage A who were playing their first match of the season. The team of Mark Fogerty, Mark Tancock and Phil Down were far too strong for Anchorage A — Richard Cole, John Watson and Bob Mitchell, Bridestowe winning their first match 10-0.

In division two Anchorage B were at home to Academy A. In their first game Roger Gilbert, after winning the two legs 11-5, 12-10, lost the next three 8-11, 8-11, 4-11 against Tom Pearce. Academy A won the next three to go 4-0 ahead — Jenny Hotchkiss lost to Tom Pengelly, Dave Wilson lost a five leg match against George Haskell playing in his first match 10-12, 9-11, 12-10, 11-6, 8-11. Anchorage B fought back to level the match at 4-4, Dave Wilson winning two singles beating both Tom Pengelly and Tom Pearce. Roger Gilbert beat George Haskell in four legs and Jenny beat George in another five legs 11-8, 13-11, 12-14, 6-11, 11-5.

Roger lost the last singles against Tom Pengelly, then joined Jenny losing to the two Toms 11-6, 11-8, 8-11, 9-11, 8-11 for Academy A's third win of the season 6-4, which takes them to the top of the division.

Moretonhampstead made the long journey to Milton Abbot and came away 6-4 winners thanks to a fine maximum from David Shilston ably supported by Rodney Tyler with two and Richard Underhill with a hard fought 14-12 fifth leg win and losing out to Max Williams again in a fifth leg decider 8-11, 12-10, 11-3, 11-13, 14-12. With the last doubles to go Moretonhampstead were 6-3 ahead but Milton Abbot won, Max Williams and Ian Osborne beat David and Richard in five legs.
