OKEHAMPTON and District Local History Society starts its new programme of talks with a talk on dressed granite by Roger Paul.

At last month's general meeting, the new programme of talks for 2013 was established. There will be more industrial archaeology in October with George Copp's talk on the clay industry at Peters Marland.

In June, Paul Rendell will give a talk, 'Water on the Moor', and in July John Allan, Exeter Cathedral's archaeologist, will be speaking about the bishop's throne.

Other talks this year include the history of the London underground, medicine in the 18th and 19th centuries, and pioneer photographers of Dartmoor.

North Tawton wartime memories and the history of Dartmoor National Park will be covered in talks in 2014.

The group is also having two summer outings. On June 19 the group will visit Great Fulford House in Dunsford, and in August, members will walk around the old industrial workings at Meldon.

The history society meets on the second Wednesday of each month at the Ockment Centre, at 7.30pm. The May meeting is on Wednesday, May 8.

New members are always welcome, particularly now at the beginning of a new talk programme. Anyone interested should call secretary Jane Lehni on 01837 840087. Non-members may attend meetings at a charge of £2 per person.
