CARNIVAL week in Moretonhampstead starts in earnest on August 17 with a talent show in the parish hall, promising an entertaining beginning to the festivities.
'Let's Dance for Moreton Carnival' is a new event and will be followed two days later on August 19 with the carnival fete on The Sentry with plenty of rural craft demonstrations, a vintage vehicle display, sideshows, stalls, dog show, fancy dress competition, funfair, tug of war and 10km run.
On the evening of August 22, there will be a party in the park where local band Linney Magic will be performing live at The Sentry while spectators enjoy a hog roast and a drink at the bar.
Carnival day is August 23 and thought to be the largest event of its kind on Dartmoor. Activities begins at 10am with fun for the children in the square where they will find face painters, bouncy castles, games, street entertainers, music and charity stalls
There will be a varied craft and country market with more than 50 stalls selling local produce, crafts and gifts from around the local area, the traditional furry dance, the crowning of the carnival royalty and the judging of the carnival entries all taking place and all leading up to the main event — the grand carnival procession, which in recent years has boasted up to 80 floats.
Partying continues with live music, this time from The Thorvertones on carnival night.
