A PUB in Chagford has been recognised for its work in the community with a £5,000 grant to donate to a youth group.
The Globe Inn has been crowned the South West regional winner in the Community Hero Awards 2012, run by Enterprise Inns.
The awards recognise publicans for the positive impact they have on their community, and each regional finalist is awarded £5,000 to assist with their community work. For the overall national winner, the prize is a £10,000 grant.
The pub is run by Graham Flight and Mary French, and they have pledged the £5,000 toward funding a support worker for the town's youth group.
If they claim the national prize, they have promised the winnings would help secure the youth club for another year.
Among the work they do in the community, they founded the Chagford Film Festival last year, which started this week.
The pub's cinema hosts film screenings, and runs monthly events like pub quizzes, open mic nights and free music evenings.
Mary said: 'It is really good to receive the award, I am quite amazed really. It is nice to be recognised for our work in the community.
'Graham and I are particularly pleased that the award money will go to the youth club, and it is important to keep it open as it is important to the young people in Chagford.'
John Longden, chief executive of the Pub Is The Hub Campaign and competition judge, said: 'I think the most wonderful thing is the wide range of employment, jobs and just other simple things that publicans do in the communities to improve not only the heart and soul of their communities, but actually benefit the wider national community.'
