SOME fascinating weather readings in Okehampton during 2011 have been sent to the Times by amateur meteorologist David Naylor.
He said: 'The legacy of the record-breaking cold of December 2010 lasted into January, but for a mild and very wet spell from January 4 to 17 in which 100.6mm of rain fell.
'The fall of 52.4mm on January 12 was the highest daily rainfall in any month since at least 2003 and the Okement rivers were often raging torrents during this spell.'
The coldest day of the year was on January 29, when temperatures remained below 0C, and the coldest night on January 31 with temperatures plummeting to -6.5C.
The warmest days of the year bookended the summer months, with the year's hottest day September 30, reaching 27C. In contrast, the warmest day in August reflected the changeable summer weather, with temperatures only reaching 21.8C on August 22.
The weather in May was kind to the Ten Tors expedition, and saw an unusual lack of rain, being the driest in the area since 1870 with only a third of the average rainfall.
December 2011 was a stark contrast to December 2010, with daytime temperatures near normal and night temperatures higher than average.
